It is unusual to give such a high rating to what is essentially a bootleg LP of radio broadcasts but much of the music on this set is extraordinary. John Coltrane is heard as a featured solost with Dizzy Gillespie's Sextet (which also includes vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist Jimmy Foreman, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Art Blakey) four years before he joined Miles Davis. Gillespie has several brilliant trumpet solos ("Good Bait" is quite memorable) and this LP allows one to hear the early influence that Dexter Gordon had on the young Coltrane. It's difficult to find but is well worth searching for.
