Given how brilliantly the Arcade Fire's Funeral explored themes of family and loss, it only makes sense that the band would be called upon to contribute to the soundtrack of the overwrought but effective HBO drama Six Feet Under, which documented the lives and deaths of a family of morticians. The synergy might be too perfect, in fact -- the group's SFU entry "Cold Wind" (reprised on this handsomely packaged 7") is an atmospheric but slight effort that derives much of its power simply from the momentum generated by the music that came before, and even if the Arcade Fire can't quite create this kind of elegiac, mournful pop in their sleep, it seems safe to assume they were at least resting their eyes during production. Still, the song's nuanced, gentle melody represents a clear departure from the majestic achievements of Funeral, and the flip side -- a faithful cover of the Depression-era hit "Brazil" -- is lovely.
