Coil is the instrumental power trio Kido Natsuki leads, as opposed to Korekyojinn in which he merely participates. Both are excellent settings for his guitar playing, but Coil is much more of a straightforward riff-oriented rock project. Kido is a monster guitar player with killer biting tone and his rhythm section can throw down. There's nothing gimmicky about Natsuki's playing; the man can just flat-out play. He's got fantastic phrasing and amazing tone and the ability to play just about anything. He can let it rip on a scorcher like "Coil Boogie" or play with great sensitivity on "Foghorn." His playing is never less than excellent. Takeharu Hayakawa also takes several really meaty bass solos while drummer Tanaka Eiji plays great throughout, especially on "Scraps." If you're familiar with Korekyojinn or Kazutoki Umezu's Kiki Band, you probably already realize that you need this album. Any fan of great rock guitar should strongly consider it.
