Canada's champion of the lounge movement, Jaymz Bee & the Royal Jelly Orchestra has been releasing "cocktail" versions of contemporary pop and rock songs since the early 1990s for various Canadian independent labels. Cocktail: Shakin' and Stirred includes ultra-chic, glittery, and remarkably, utterly plastic versions of, among others, AOR rock classics such as "Takin' Care of Business" (Bachman-Turner Overdrive) and "American Woman" (the Guess Who), and alternative rock favorites "You Oughta Know" (Alanis Morissette) and "Superman Song" (Crash Test Dummies). Like a desert-dry gin martini with green olives, Cocktail: Shakin' and Stirred is definitely an acquired taste that requires considerable getting used to -- all the rock & roll has been distilled out of these songs and replaced with Englebert Humperdinck smarminess. Potent in small doses, but too much might make you sick.
