A fine Canadian vibraphonist, Stefan Bauer teams up with pianist Bernie Senensky, bassist Jim Vivian, drummer Barry Romberg, and (on six of the dozen selections) trumpeter Kenny Wheeler for a set of high-quality post-bop jazz. The opening selection, "Flâneur," was cut in 1994, but otherwise the music is from January 1996. Ten of the songs (all but the standards "I Hear a Rhapsody" and "Lover Man") are Bauer originals. The blend of his vibes with Wheeler's trumpet (or flügelhorn) works quite well and the music is at times reminiscent (but not derivative) of early Bobby Hutcherson. Well worth checking out.
