AllMusic Review by

This fifth volume from The Smithsonian Collection focuses on the modern movement, from Sonny Rollins' 1956 recording of "Blue 7" to a 1981 track featuring the World Saxophone Quartet. In between are seminal sides from Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, the Bill Evans Trio, Cecil Taylor, and the John Coltrane Quartet. Like the other volumes in the series, the largest chunk of the compilation shines the spotlight on a single artist, in this case Ornette Coleman, who shines on "Lonely Woman," "Congeniality," and an excerpt of "Free Jazz."
