Clarence Williams Band: 1928 Review

by Scott Yanow

Although pianist Clarence Williams gets top billing on this LP, in reality all of the music is dominated by the vocals of Anna Bell, Katharine Henderson, or Laura Bryant. Williams's bands (which include cornetists Ed Allen and/or King Oliver, clarinetist Arville Harris or Ben Whittet, Cyrus St. Clair on tuba, trombonist Ed Cuffee, and sometimes the tenor of Benny Waters) is mostly restricted to background work with an occasional short solo. This collectors' album is of lesser interest.
