Engineer Robert Parker is famous (or in some minds infamous) for remastering early jazz recordings and making them sound as if they were originally made for stereo. This CD from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, made available domestically through DRG, has 16 performances by the bandleader and occasional pianist Clarence Williams. Most of the selections are quite enjoyable, but the programming, jumping back and forth over a seven-year period, is pretty random and lowers this sampler's value. Still, there are quite a few enjoyable tracks, including "Candy Lips," "You're Bound to Look like a Monkey When You Get Old," "Close Fit Blues" and "He Wouldn't Stop Doin' It," with many all-stars getting a chance to solo during the heated small-group jams.
