One of the most inviting alternative rock bands of the late '80s and early '90s, Mary's Danish had an impressive ability to make the abstract seem not quite so abstract. As quirky as Circa is, there's no question that such offerings as "Julie's Blanket," "Venus Loves Leonard" and "Abalone Blues" groove in a delightfully rockin' fashion. The band often inspires comparisons to punkers/roots rockers X, and in fact, vocalists Julie Ritter and Gretchen Seager both have an Exene-ish quality to their singing. But Danish's own music as well as an unorthodox version of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" leave no doubt that Mary's Danish had an appealing personality of its own.
