AllMusic Review by

Bassist Chubby Jackson has only led record dates on an irregular basis throughout his long career. This LP has two of Jackson's finest studio sessions, a sextet set from 1947 that features trumpeter Conte Candoli and the obscure but fine tenor Emmett Carls, and an all-star 12-piece big band date. The latter set really has an impressive personnel listing, including trumpeter Howard McGhee, trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, both Zoot Sims and Georgie Auld on tenors and baritonist Gerry Mulligan in an early outing. On both sessions, the music is extroverted bop with plenty of exciting solos by the key players, who are pushed by Jackson's verbal encouragement.
