Lang Lang's Chopin, a compilation previously available in Germany, features the Chinese superstar in a reissued performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, with Zubin Mehta conducting the Vienna Philharmonic and offering energy to match the soloist. Most listeners will find this 2008 performance to be the high point of this album, because the give and take between Mehta and Lang Lang provides the tension and structure that are sometimes missing in the pianist's solo playing. The 2005 performance of the Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor is flashy and intense, and listeners who like Lang Lang for his fiery execution will not be disappointed. The isolated final track of the Étude in E major, Op. 10/3, "Tristesse," may seem like an odd ending to this album, except that it has received attention in a vocal arrangement on Sony Masterworks' Chopin Album that Lang Lang recorded with Danish singer Oh Land for the film The Flying Machine. Because of the different recording dates and venues, the sound quality is slightly variable.
