Looks can indeed be deceiving, especially in the case of this compilation. While the external packaging does the internal music absolutely no justice whatsoever, those who can manage to check out this CD without simply disregarding it as "just another chillout compilation" will be pleasantly surprised. Culled largely from the legendary Chicago soul Curtom label, this two-disc set is a soulful excursion that exceeds the absurd chill factor set forth in the compilation's name. This isn't just chilled soul, this is white-hot soul of the finest order. A large majority of soul royalty are represented here: Curtis Mayfield appears several times and multiple appearances by Linda Clifford and Bobby Womack reinforce just how good this compilation is; and obscurists will be pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of Leroy Hutson and Gene Chandler into the mix. This is one chillout compilation that is solid throughout with timeless soul throughout both discs and an excellent primer for the brilliance that Mayfield and company laid forth all of those decades ago.
