Resting on the tenet that "faking compositional genius is a drag, and too much paperwork anyway, " Davey Williams sets out a collection of overdubbed, improvisational guitar pieces on Charmed..., most of which are more interesting as a conceptual endeavor than as listening. A quick read over Williams' liner notes confirms that he's thinking more about the processes of his own improvisation than the listening quality of the results, which calls for something of a warning: the strange and proggy tracks on Charmed... may prove quite fascinating for musicians and music lovers who are inclined to analyze the ethics of improvisation, but mainstream listeners (and even some experimentally-minded listeners) might be peeved by the fact that the album offers little in terms of direct appeal.
