AllMusic Review by

Part of a valuable overview of the work of one of the 20th century's greatest composers, this volume consists of recordings made throughout the 1940s by one of Duke Ellington's greatest lineups. It covers such masterful works as elements of the composer and bandleader's "Black, Brown and Beige Suite," as well as more well-known pieces like "In a Mellotone," "Jack the Bear," and Mood Indigo." Rarely heard arrangements like "Royal Garden Blues" and the up-tempo "Swamp Fire" make this collection of interest to longtime Ellington fans and newcomers alike.
