Unlike other K-Tel titles in their Celtic Collections series, this is not a compilation album of Hedge School's previous output, but the debut recording from this five-piece Celtic rock band from Dublin. Combining traditional material with group originals, Hedge School offers up high voltage AOR-styled music seldom heard in Celtic circles. With vocal and guitar licks comparable to Scorpions and Rainbow, Hedge School tackles Irish standards like "Rocky Road to Dublin," "Raggle Taggle Gypsy," and "The Foggy Dew" with perhaps more energy and amplification than these songs have ever experienced. The group originals like "Wings of a Dove," "Lambs to the Slaughter," and "Hedge School" are generally more reserved pop/rock numbers that lack an inherent Irish flavor and are essentially filler material. It's the traditional tunes that are the draw here.
