Using tight arrangements and big drums without resorting to studio excess, Caryl Mack Parker's self-titled debut is radio-ready and something of a new country gem. With its easy warmth, her mature alto voice wraps itself lovingly around these eleven well-penned tunes, mostly co-written with her guitarist husband, Scott Parker. In true country tradition there are songs that traverse the spectrum of romance: lost love, found love, heartbreak, forgiveness and inspiration. For good Nashville measure a night of serious drinking is thrown in on the song "Bourbon Confession," with the resultant sobering effects. But this CD is not the same old wine in a brand new bottle. Fans of Linda Ronstadt, Carole King--even Kenny Loggins--would be well advised to tune in to Ms. Parker's sound.
