This super young band works in the great vibes-led Latin-jazz-inflected quintet sound of the '50s and early '60s. You've heard Cal Tjader and stopped sneering at George Shearing. But the great groups in this vein -- The TNT Band and the like, even Joe Cuba, were filled with New York Latinos and cut much closer to the salsa bone. Carabali has the whole thing down pat, including the change-of-pace English language songs and terrific vibist Valerie Naranjo working off Oscar Hernandez's piano just like the hippest of mellow old times.
