Even though Ugetsu is modeled after Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, they do an admirable job achieving a timeless hard bop sound that is truly their own. Founded in 1996 by bassist Martin Zenker and featuring Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomarev who played with the Messengers from 1976 to 1980, this band is a favorite live attraction worldwide. Cape Town Blues contains all original material and was inspired by a weeklong stay in Capetown, South Africa, in 1999. This is Ugetsu's first release to appear on the budget Naxos Jazz label.
