AllMusic Review by

In 1997, Original Cast released Cantor Meets Jolson, a three-CD compendium of Al Jolson's guest appearances on six different broadcasts of Eddie Cantor's popular radio program. Beginning with excerpts from 1937 when the show was sponsored by Texaco gasoline, this compilation also taps into shows sponsored by Bristol Meyers (makers of Ipana toothpaste and Sal Hepetica mouthwash, for which reason Cantor's show was called "It's Time to Smile"); and through to the beginning of 1949 with Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. In addition to scripted topical humor and several solo numbers by Jolson, guest performers are singing actress Deanna Durbin, comedian Sidney Fields (best-known for his role as Abbott & Costello's landlord); Dinah Shore (whose musical numbers include a tidy treatment of Una Mae Carlisle's "Walkin' by the River"); Lee Bristol, Bert Gordon, British thespian Michael Redgrave, actress Billie Burke (better known as Glinda the Good Witch of the North), and actor/comedian Harry Von Zell, all backed by an orchestra under the direction of Cookie Fairchild.
