Power pop, a style where songs can often seem similar over the course of a full album, is particularly amenable to the EP form, and this release by is a perfect example. Boston-bred singer/songwriter Matt Keating's CANDY VALENTINE contains five strong acoustic pop songs, with no filler or failed experiments.
The title track is one of Keating's finest songs, a memorable and hook-filled ballad with smart, canny lyrics. The other four songs are similarly low-key, but well-arranged. Keating's albums are occasionally too overdriven, with inappropriately noisy guitars, but this quieter, folkier style suits his songs very well.
