This rather odd selection of the Beach Boys' tracks has some of the obvious hits, but also includes a couple of later gems that weren't huge smashes ("Breakaway," "Friends"), as well as some songs you won't want to hear more than once, like Bruce Johnston's "Deirdre" and "Tears in the Morning." While having the Beach Boys record John Phillips' "California Dreaming" (the lead track here) might seem inspired, the version the group came up with adds nothing to the original by the Mamas & the Papas, and is actually kind of lame. There are dozens of Beach Boys' anthologies on the market, and a good half of them are better than this one.
