Bunny Berigan 1936, Vol. 1 Review

by Scott Yanow

This excellent LP from the Swedish collector's label Jazz Information features three sessions from Bunny Berigan and His Boys (predating his big band) and four numbers by Fank Froeba's Swing Band (on which Berigan also stars). He was the top trumpeter in jazz during 1935-39 (even surpassing Louis Armstrong) and there is plenty of proof of his mastery on these hot small-group swing recordings. Other soloists include clarinetist Joe Marsala, tenorman Bud Freeman and pianist Joe Bushkin, and highlights include an early version of "I Can't Get Started," "I'ts Been So Long," and "Whatcha Gonna Do When There Ain't No Swing?"
