AllMusic Review by

One of England's finest no-cheese club nights, Manchester's Bugged Out tests the waters of the mix-CD market with this double-disc featuring two of dance music's most under-recognized DJ/producers. Manc staple and club resident Justin Robertson opens with Sam "The Man" Burns announcing, "House music can no longer be, commercial-free." Appropriate, given the massive popularity of the club's "underground" ventures. From there, he goes completely tribal, edging the music harder with each consecutive track, from house to techno. Robertson also pays tribute to great records from the club's history, dropping year 2000 remixes of acid house classics including Timo Maas' Y2K rework of Josh Wink's "Don't Laugh," Slam's own remix of "Positive Education," and Danny Tenaglia's epic stomping version of the seminal Green Velvet track, "Flash." Robertson creates an intense energy, perfect for an all-nighter. Though nowhere near as diverse as his almost-perfect Journeys by DJ mix, it is several marks above his Imprint mix-CD. On the other hand, Felix da Housecat's mix stretches the musical boundaries far beyond the bumpin' Chicago house one would expect. Yes, he plays tracks by fellow Windy City artists Gene Farris and Paul Johnson, but not until after opening with the precise German micro-house of Isolée's cross-genre sensation "Beau Mot Plage" and Markus Nikolai's shimmying "Bushes." But the real juicy parts come in the latter-half of the mix, when Felix opens up a jar of new wave/industrial whup-ass with Nitzer Ebb's "Join in the Chant," the proto- industrial-techno punishment of "Los Ninos del Parque" by Liasons Dangereuses, and a freaky pseudo-cover of New Order's "Blue Monday," re-titled "New Monday" by a group calling themselves Dirty Diana. These selections clearly foreshadow Felix's 2002 breakthrough album Kittenz and Thee Glitz, proving that he didn't just jump on the '80s retro bandwagon. Underground, informed, and fun-as-hell; every city could use a weekly like Bugged Out.
