A small but surprisingly solid budget collection, Bubble Gum Hits collects ten of the style's definitive tracks, including Ohio Express' "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy," Tommy Roe's "Dizzy," the Cuff Links' "Tracy," and the Archies' "Sugar Sugar," which might be the quintessential bubblegum single. White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'" and Boyce & Hart's "I Wonder What She's Doin' Tonight" are two other standout examples of bubblegum songcraft, while the Osmonds' cover of the Jackson 5's "One Bad Apple" proves that they were capable of making the song even more sugary than the Jacksons did. And while Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" isn't exactly bubblegum in the truest sense of the word, its sparkly sound and playful choruses make it a good fit with the rest of the collection. Though there are bigger and deeper bubblegum compilations available, Bubble Gum Hits is still a concise and entertaining primer on the style.
