Although the music on this Nine Winds LP is quite advanced, the humor displayed by some of the players (most notably trombonist John Rapson, trumpeter John Fumo and altoist Steve Fowler) helps make the performances more accessible. On six Rapson originals, the octet (which includes Bill Roper on tuba, bassist Ken Filiano, drummer Tom Lackner, percussionist Alex Cline and Nine Winds founder Vinny Golia on six instruments) creates some intriguing tone colors, along with spirited and throughly unpredictable solos. Worth investigating by open-eared listeners.
