AllMusic Review by

The second single released from Big Country's fourth album, Peace in Our Time, was "Broken Heart (Thirteen Valleys)," a stirring song in the tradition of "In a Big Country" and other Big Country hits. The song was also released as part of this four-song EP, along with three non-LP tracks. Of the three, the winner is "When a Drum Beats," which would have been a credit to Peace in Our Time if it had been included. "Starred and Crossed" is slighter and "Soapy Soutar Strikes Back" is an instrumental, perhaps because Big Country second guitarist Bruce Watson never got around to writing lyrics for it. Like many such projects, the Broken Heart EP is an addendum to the album from whose sessions it came. (Inexplicably, the EP cover, all in red, featured the hammer-and-sickle symbol of communism, which may not have helped the record's commercial prospects, at least in some markets.)
