Featuring the booming lead voices of Clarence Fountain and Louis Dicks, the Five Blind Boys of Alabama roar through a dozen passionate tunes here in trademark hard gospel style. Only the twist of a lyric away from being straight secular soul, Fountain and company shine on the joyous and loping "Jesus on My Mind" and deliver a completely sanctified version of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Listeners looking for a historical retrospective of the group's 50-year career should probably pass this one by, but for a straight-ahead set of deep soul gospel with no frills or fills, look no further. Drawn from the Blind Boys' stay at HOB Records, this same set has been released several times by different labels, including identical sequences (with different covers) from Calvin Records (in 2005) and Liquid 8 (in 2003).
