Southside Reverb is Kelly Reverb and Chad Littlepage, a duo that deals in techno, or electronica, or big beat, or whatever the club-correct term is this month. It's dance music in the Chemical Brothers vein: lots of block-rockin' breakbeats with bleepy synthesizer and a spare sprinkling of sampled voices. There are no original ideas here-this is basically a pleasing array of techno cliches, all nicely rendered. In fact, "nice" is really the operative term, despite the duo's Ministryesque sunglasses-and-cowboy-hat pose. The music rocks, all right, but in a relatively polite and unconfrontational way. The highlights are genuine, though, and include the very nice "Are You Up to This?," the lovely female singers on "No Need for Control" and some very creative sample manipulation on the supremely funky "Steady Breakin'". Remember: it doesn't have to change the world; it only has to move your booty.
