Rio carnival aside, Brazil is full of African-derived percussion. Batucada descends directly from the social dances permitted slaves once a week; batucada is a dynamite percussion music. This CD includes many of the styles of the Northeast, one of Brazil's richest musical areas. Despite the title it includes festival music of all sorts, including carnival samba from both Rio and the Northeast, including African-derived religious rituals for the goddesses of fire and the sea, street music with military brass, a delicious banjo and clarinet piece, Capoeira with berimbau, and accordion. The variety is staggering.
