This succinct best-of features three of Merle Haggard's more autobiographical songs in "Branded Man," Hungry Eyes," and "Workin' Man Blues," as well as some of his gloomier country material, like "Things Aren't Funny Anymore," "I Threw Away the Rose," and "I'm Always on a Mountain When I Fall." Despite their melancholy, these gritty, stripped-down songs were all massive hits for the singer in the 1960s. Though the '80s were less kind to Haggard's brand of stark realism, he made a welcome comeback in the late1990s and early 21st century.
