AllMusic Review by

Most of the tracks on Body & Soul: Blue Lights in the Basement aren't nearly mellow or romantic enough to be appropriate for a blue-light party. If you can disregard the misleading title, the content cannot be debated: Loose Ends' "Hangin' on a String (Contemplating)," the System's "You Are in My System," the S.O.S. Band's "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," and Luther Vandross' "Never Too Much" represent the absolute best of '80s R&B, while the handful of earlier cuts -- the Temptations' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," Parliament's "Flashlight," and Kool & the Gang's "Jungle Boogie" -- are equally essential.
