AllMusic Review by

The importance of Luigi Boccherini to the development of the cello as a soloistic and chamber instrument cannot be understated. Boccherini was himself an early virtuoso on the instrument and composed myriad sonatas and concertos for his own use early in his career. Later, when his attention turned to chamber music, the cello still played a special, prevalent role that it had never seen before. Despite his importance to the instrument, few of his sonatas are performed with any frequency save for the famous A major Sonata. Cellist Luigi Puxeddu and his associates prove on this Brilliant Classics album that such neglect is a grievous error. In a series of recordings made between August 2007 and October 2008, Puxeddu lays out the complete extant 26 sonatas accompanied primarily by cello (basso) but occasionally by violin or viola. Puxeddu's playing emphasizes Boccherini's belief that the bow was of primary importance in musical expression. It is through subtly in bow speed and the resultant dynamics and accents that Puxeddu adds color to his clear tone, rather than through vibrato. While not flawlessly in tune, Puxeddu's playing is still quite polished technically with an especially nimble left hand that delivers the virtuosity of Boccherini's writing without making it sound difficult. The tone achieved by Puxeddu and his accompanists is wonderfully rich and warm. There is a substantial amount of difference in recorded sound from one disc to another, which is a little off-putting if listening straight through the set, but overall Brilliant's sound captures all of the subtlety and nuance of Puxeddu's playing.
