This set, a reissue of six songs from an LP plus four previously unreleased numbers, serves as a perfect tribute to altoist Christer Boustedt, who died in 1986. The hard bop altoist, who had his own sound and played adventurous solos, is heard in a quartet/quintet with trumpeter Bosse Broberg (who is on seven of the ten numbers), pianist Ake Johansson, bassist Ivar Lindell, and drummer Gilbert Matthews. The music is comprised of group originals, one obscurity, and fine quartet renditions of Charlie Parker's "Quasimodo," "Lush Life," and "Well You Needn't." Boustedt plays with a lot of passion, Broberg works well with him, and the rhythm section is stimulating. This release from the Swedish Dragon label, despite the lack of "big names," should be of interest to modern straight-ahead jazz fans.
