AllMusic Review by

This LP is a real curiosity in the history of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, for it found his band utilizing two trumpets (Lee Morgan and Freddie Hill and welcoming Buddy DeFranco as the only reed player, with the clarinetist sticking exclusively to bass clarinet. Even the repertoire, which includes John Coltrane's "Cousin Mary," Ornette Coleman's "Blues Connotation" and Leonard Feather's "Twelve Tone Blues," is unusual. DeFranco is the main soloist throughout this unique (if consistently swinging) set.
