Bassist Bruce Gertz's debut date as a leader is a sparse and thoughtful post-bop session. Jerry Bergonzi contributes some John Coltrane-inspired solos, pianist Joey Calderazzo adds the flavor of McCoy Tyner to the date, and drummer Adam Nussbaum is fine in support, but it is the interplay between Gertz and guitarist John Abercrombie that gives this set its personality. The bassist contributed all ten songs, including "While You Were Out" (which is reminiscent of Coltrane's "Giant Steps") and two versions of the medium-tempo blues "Proton." The music is a bit dry at times, but gains in interest with each listen.
