Blue Hawaii: Island Magic Review

by Gregory McIntosh

Blue Hawaii: Island Magic is made up of the kitschy mainland American hits that helps hold visions of Hawaii as a tiki-bar haven for filthy-rich business types firmly in place. That certainly isn't a bad thing, simply because the atmosphere of the music that jogs into that realm is fun music; it should just be noted that the music on this sampler is not actual traditional Hawaiian music, but that of the '50s American culture which glorified the island as heaven on earth with beautiful native dancers in grass skirts to take away any and all worries forever. The recordings of classic kitsch numbers like "Blue Hawaii," "Island of Golden Dreams," and others aren't particularly crisp fidelity-wise, making Blue Hawaii: Island Magic somewhat difficult to listen to, but a fun listen nonetheless.
