Blue is the theme on this swing-era mix: not the color itself, mind you, but its namesake's many maudlin and low-down connotations. Beyond this bit of programmatic fun, the music provides a fine survey of '30s sides, albeit often on the more obscure side of things. Bookended by Basie's classic "Blue & Sentimental" and Teddy Hill's tasty "Blue Rhythm Fantasy," the mix takes in quality material from Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, the Chocolate Dandies, Benny Moten, and Chick Webb. Henry Allen, Maxine Sullivan, Fats Waller, and even Dinah Shore chime in with their own wistful confessions as well. A unique and very enjoyable collection.
