The 2014 two-fer compilation Blakey's Beat features two live Art Blakey albums: 1974's In This Korner and 1981's Straight Ahead. In This Korner features one of Blakey's lesser-appreciated Jazz Messengers lineups with trumpeter Valery Ponomarev and saxophonist Bobby Watson. In contrast, Straight Ahead showcases the storied '80s Messengers ensemble that introduced the world to trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Both of these albums are superb post-bop workouts and it's nice to have them collected in one place.
