The original score to Joe Berlinger's muddled Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, the ill-conceived sequel to The Blair Witch Project, features compositions by Carter Burwell. Burwell seems to be making the best of a bad situation with his percussive, minimalist pieces, which mimic the "soundtrack" of snapping twigs, rustling leaves, and unidentifiable moans that helped make the first Blair Witch tense, if not downright scary. However, this understated approach also makes the Book of Shadows score somewhat forgettable outside of the film's context, though "Funny Farm," "Stream Dream," "Barely," and "The Truth?" make a creepy, implosive impression. Though this score isn't Burwell's best work, it still manages to create as much of an ominous, suspenseful air about the film as possible.
