Marclay plays turntables -- using the clicks of vinyl discs, by scratching, back-and-forth manual rotation, mixing, varispeed etc. -- using recordings as artifacts of society. He has also created art objects with the same records -- "Footsteps" is a one-sided record containing the sounds of footsteps. 3500 copies were spread on the floor of the Shedhalle galleries in Zurich and people were invited to walk on them over the course of 6 weeks, and 1000 of the records with dirt and scratches were made available by Gelbe Musik. He has also made a "Record without grooves" with a gold label housed in a black velour cover with golden writing, signed and numbered.
