Black on Black: A Tribute to Black Flag includes nine thrashy hardcore punk bands' interpretations of mostly Rollins-era Black Flag songs. Bands such as the Dillinger Escape Plan, Coalesce, the Hope Conspiracy, Burnt by the Sun, and Planes Mistaken for Stars deliver covers that are frequently more intense and frenzied than the originals; most of the nine songs whip by without slowing down to the punishing grind that Black Flag made their stock in trade on albums like My War and -- to a lesser extent -- Slip It In. The disc is over in less than half an hour, but the ferocity of these songs is such that most ears wouldn't be able to take much more in a single sitting. As far as tribute albums go, this is one of the better ones. It goes without saying, but Damaged and The First Four Years should be in your collection before this.
