A bit of an anachronism in the San Francisco electronics scene, Otaku creates dark trip-hop with deep beats, often mashing up rhythms mid-track like the best turntablists. Occasionally reminiscent of big beat techno at a slightly slower tempo, Bitwise Operators features fragile, cinematic melodies. The two-part "Dub Bass" summons the spirit of the Orb with several minutes of gently wandering ambient-dub, complete with heavy basslines, reverbed effects, and plenty of nonsensical vocal samples (lifted from a few too-obvious sources like The Simpsons and Happy Gilmore).
