Billboard Top Dance Hits: 1985 Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Billboard Top Dance Hits: 1985 is a budget-priced collection containing ten dance hits from 1985. A few of the tracks, including Nuance's "Loveride" and Kaja's "Turn Your Back on Me," are original single versions, but almost all of the disc consists of extended remixes of songs like Patti LaBelle's "New Attitude," Exposé's "Point of No Return," Kool & the Gang's "Fresh," Paul Hardcastle's "19," Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love," Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," Dan Hartman's "We Are the Young" "and Billy Ocean's "Loverboy." "Casual fans may find these remixes a little irritating, since they'll want the versions they heard on the radio, but these mixes make the disc individual -- especially since they're remixes from the '80s, not new mixes. These versions aren't found on many collections, and that's why this is one of the more worthwhile mid-'80s dance comps on the market.
