Big Time Country contains a selection of ten country songs from the Columbia Records vaults. At first glance, the collection appears to concentrate on story-songs, since it has "El Paso," "North to Alaska," "Big Bad John," "Detroit City," "The City of New Orleans" and Tammy Wynette's take on "Ode to Billie Joe." Upon further inspection, that theory falls apart, since Stonewall Jackson's "A Wound Time Can't Erase," Ray Price's "For the Good Times," and Johnny Cash's versions of "The City of New Orleans" and "Wabash Cannonball" don't quite fit the bill. So, Big Time Country winds up as another budget-line hodgepodge that is fairly entertaining but serves no real purpose.
