Martin Belmont's resume indicates where he's coming from. A former member of Ducks Deluxe and the Rumour and sideman for Carlene Carter and Nick Lowe, Belmont has his pub rock and roots-rock credentials down cold, and that's exactly what you get on his solo album, Big Guitar. Running through a collection of originals, unknown gems and classic covers ("Ring of Fire," "Howlin' for My Baby"), Belmont turns in an enjoyable, if inconsequential record. The production is a bit too slick, boasting the big drums and polished tones that were unfortunately the trend in the '80s, but Belmont's affection for the material and music shines through, and that's what makes it an entertaining listen.
