Two somewhat forgotten big bands are featured on this LP from the Capitol Jazz Classics series of the mid-'70s. Benny Carter's 1943-45 orchestra never really caught on but it did have an impressive personnel (including trombonist J.J. Johnson who is heard on "Love for Sale" taking his first recorded solo) and high musicianship. Trumpeter Cootie Williams's big band had strong soloists in the leader/trumpeter, tenorman Sam "The Man" Taylor and altoist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson (who is well-featured on the romping "House of Joy"). Spirited swing music, it looks toward early R&B.
