This is only the second album for veteran organist Rhoda Scott during a 50-plus year career, most of it spent as an expatriate in Paris, France. A live recording from the famous Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay, CA, Scott presents the lighter side of standards played in soul-jazz trim, with help from tenor saxophonist Rickey Woodard and the always excellent drummer Akira Tana. Scott is poised and reserved, using her internal fire to simmer on classic material, getting into a little bit of hard bop with scat vocalist Kim Nalley during "Falling in Love with Love," or doing the energetic, classic boogie number "Roll 'Em Pete." Woodard takes up a lot of space, favorably filling the cracks with swing and soul, as Scott muses her way through this long overdue and welcome set.
