CDHW have forged quite a niche in their rediscovery of long-lost classics, profiling the celebrated German jazz imprint MPS with Between or Beyond the Black Forest in 1999 and touching Eastern European jazz-funk in 2001's Between or Beyond the Iron Curtain. This volume heads north for another archaeological dig in the crates, discovering ten gems from the thrift shops of Sweden, Finland, and Norway. Magical cuts take in the rich brass and bleeps of Staffan Abeleen's "Mr. Minor," Olli Ahvenlahti's enjoyable fusion piece "Grandma's Rocking Chair," and the irresistible "Batucuda Por Favor" from Bob Azzam. With very little chance of sourcing original copies of these records, many of which are over 20 years of age, and without booking a flight to Scandinavia, this is another impeccable selection of hot wax.
