Following Jim Morrison's death in 1971, the three remaining members of the Doors (Ray Manzarek, John Densmore, and Robby Krieger) continued performing and recording together until finally disbanding in 1973. That same year, they issued their third greatest-hits compilation, The Best of the Doors, which was culled from their eight studio albums together. It was notable at the time for being issued in quadraphonic sound, an early precursor to contemporary 4.0 surround sound. This 2015 version of the album from the Audio Fidelity label updates the mix to the SACD surround sound format.
