Much like the other discs in Madacy's surprisingly well-packaged Best of Soul series, Best of Soul 70s balances oft-compiled songs with a handful of less familiar ones. It's also quite skimpy at 12 songs, but there's nary a weak selection in the bunch, making for a decent impulse purchase. Make no mistake -- this disc is hardly as definitive as its title suggests. However, it's still quite enjoyable, since most of these songs are ageless. Highlights include Sister Sledge's "We Are Family," A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie," Earth, Wind & Fire's "September," Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell," the Isley Brothers' "I Wanna Be With You," and Rick James' "You and I."
